CRPA ANNOUNCES
NEW ENVIRONMENT WATCH PROGRAM
California Rifle and Pistol Association President Don Wood announced today, from the organization's headquarters in Fullerton, the activation of the CRPA "Forest Watch" program. This new program is designed to allow CRPA and its many thousands of members who are hunters or recreational target shooters to have greater, and more timely, input into the administrators and managers who oversee California's nineteen national forests on matters pertaining to hunting, recreational shooting, wildlife and habitat management issues.
Current federal environmental laws require each national forest to publish a Schedule of Proposed Actions (SOPA) every three months outlining all management rule changes and work projects proposed for each period. The new CRPA "Forest Watch" program will establish a cadre of forest watch volunteers for each national forest. Those forest watchers will carefully review each SOPA as it is issued and alert CRPA Headquarters staff of any proposals pertaining to hunting, wildlife management, recreational use of firearms or habitat changes. CRPA staff can then prepare a suitable response to the proposal in a timely manner so as to meet the various time frame deadlines for input as spelled out in the law.
Statewide coordinator for the new program will be Walt Mansell of Red Bluff. Mansell serves as the CRPA Natural Resources Liaison. Mansell is retired from a thirty-five-year career with the California Resources Agency. During that period he served in many field, supervisory and management positions around the state, working for both the Department of Forestry and the Department of Fish & Game.
When asked about the specific goals for the new program, Mansell stated "we want to provide a counterbalance of common sense and a return to the true multiple use concepts for management of our national forests to help offset the radical environmental movements program of locking up our forests and staying out of them, which has become the norm over much of our national forest lands here in California over the past few decades."
