About Smallbore Rifle Shooting
Smallbore (22 cal.) Rifle Target Shooting both prone and position is a wonderfully entertaining pastime that is one of the few sports that can be performed at the highest level by those from 12 to 70 +. Up and down the state the allure of this shooting game is to bring out new shooters to learn the game, as well as experienced shooters who are finding the time in their 40’s to get back to the fun. Many families are getting the young ones into junior shooting programs that teach gun safety and the basics of rifle marksmanship. The more dedicated graduates of these programs can go on to earn college scholarships in the N.C.A.A sport of smallbore rifle & air rifle shooting.

The CRPA continually promotes junior participation in all the California Smallbore Rifle State Championships by offering funding for juniors that are qualifying championships to compete at the state championships.  Additionally, the CRPA supports the junior team representing California at the National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio each summer.  If you’re a high power long range palma shooter this is one of the best ways to train  (100 yards with a 22 is like 800 with a 308) Call or visit one of the ranges that conduct smallbore rifle events or contact the CRPA Committee as shown below.  From these contacts you can determine the equipment being used, the targets being shot, the availability of coaching for both adults and juniors, and where to buy guns, ammo and equipment.

Air Rifle Shooting
There are a number of different types of air rifle shooting so you should be able to find something that will interest you.  There is 10 meter Olympic, Silhouette and Field target style shooting.

The major advantage of air rifles is that you can set up a range at home and practice without ever having to travel at all.  Also you can practice regardless of what the weather is outside.  A proper backstop can be fabricated with readily available materials.  Also there are a number of pellet traps that come with knock down and spinning targets to test your skill.

The air rifle range at home also provides an excellent opportunity to instill the proper range safety practices to prevent accidents without having to deal with a lot of other people around and the loud noise of firearm discharges.  Once trained these habits easily carry over to the use of firearms later.

The Smallbore Rifle Committee has oversight of the Air Rifle activities and is primarily focused on the International Air Rifle, 3- Position Precision Air Rifle and 3- Position Sporter Air Rifle State Championship events.
